Early 19thC. Josiah Spode Peacock Bowl - C. 1815 - England

Though the Peacock pattern has been in the Spode repetoire for centuries, this is a rare and unique example of its first iteration, manufactured during the Josiah Spode period. Based on the mark, the bowl represents the earliest example of the Peacock pattern #2083, which was first introduced by Josiah Spode II in 1814. Authentication of these facts has been obtained from the Spode Trust and is available to interested buyers of this item by emailing the seller. The Peacock pattern was first printed in black and then over-painted by hand with polychrome enamels. Peacock was produced on stone china which closely imitated the Chinese porcelains. Later it was produced on both earthenware and bone china. The pattern shows a chinoiserie scene with a peacock and a pheasant standing on rocky outcroppings. They are set in a flowing garden with one typical oversized pink peony. Bringing the exceptional and enduring charm of chinoiserie decoration the "Peacock" pattern was one of the most popular Spode patterns of the early 19th century. As imports from China declined at the end of the 18th century, English porcelain factories copied the Chinese patterns. They adapted the patterns to suit English tastes of the time. Josiah Spode II first copied the Chinese "Peacock" design, circa 1814. This particular bowl is one of the very first ever created.
