A mid to late 19th century English antique Staffordshire figurine of the young Edward (known as Bertie), Prince of Wales - the future King Edward VII. The figure shows him standing with a Tibetan goat, a gift to his sister fro the Shah of Iran, It dates from around 1850. Edward was born to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1841. It is exceptionally well modeled and hand painted and shows the brown-haired Edward in a cobalt blue frock coat with an ermine-trimmed coat. His bay-color horse is standing with one leg bent. The figurine is in very good condition save for a loss of some enamel on the horse's tail. There also appears to be a separation at the leg from the body of the horse. This was typical the hand-modeling and slip-casting required in manufacture rather than of a post-manufacture cause. Strikingly outstanding old Staffordshire in impeccable condition. Standing a prominent 9" in height, this is a bold iteration of what became a very popular subject model for later Staffordshire. Indeed. this very could have been one of the first iterations as the use of deep cobalt strongly suggests that this piece was created in 1850, or prior, as cobalt blue ceased to be used after 1850 in Staffordshire wares due to rarity. Here is a depiction of the Princess Royal on her Tibetan goat "Bill", a birthday gift from the Shah of Iran. The intense detail of the garland draped across Billy is indicative of high quality Staffordshire modeling, and of the period itself. The Seller guarantees its authenticity post-sale. Moreover, its authenticity has been confirmed by a third party expert, a prominent dealer of Staffordshire ware Height 9 3/4" (25cm), Width 8" (20cm), Depth 2 5/8" (6.6cm) Weight 2lbs 6 0z. (1.07kg)
